004: Are You Seeing The Real Problem?

It's easy to look but not really see.
Or listen but not really hear.

Take the challenge of mixing a piece of music.

The goal on a technical level is to create a piece of music where the instruments sit well together and where the piece as a whole sounds good on every variation of speaker system.

On a more important level though, the goal is to create a piece of music that moves people, excites them and sends them to another place.

There are an infinite number of decisions we could make to try to achieve those things, and the tools we have to make those decisions are simply our ears and a set of speakers.

But the problem is the speakers can lie to us.

The room in which they are housed can skew the sound of the music to make us hear things that aren't really there, and that, in turn, can cause us to make corrections that aren't really needed.

When those corrections are translated to another speaker system in another room, the music sounds like it's missing the very thing you've taken out.

It starts to lose its life and its soul.

With any problem, we need the right tools to be able to get an accurate understanding of what the problem is.

This is about having true awareness of the situation.

We then need to have the knowledge and the confidence to be able to make a decision which can help us move forwards.

This matters with something as small as a hobby like the one I mentioned earlier, or something as big as deciding what we need to do with the direction of a business.

So, could I challenge you with your approach to whatever problem you're facing this week?

Could you make a concerted effort to look at the problem behind the problem, the root cause rather than the immediately obvious?

What would happen if you fixed that instead?
