Recording their story, capturing their character.

A Native Origin portrait documentary is a cinematic film that captures the stories, character, and wisdom of a grandparent or parent, preserving them for future generations.

Many of us have a natural inclination to reflect on our lives and seek a deeper understanding of those who came before us. We are curious about the experiences of our family members, the lessons they have learned, and how they have become the individuals they are. We also contemplate our own personal journey, the qualities and traits that shape us, and how our story is intertwined with the narratives of our ancestors.

Recording family stories in a book, building a family tree, or conducting an audio or video interview can provide valuable insights. However, a Native Origin portrait documentary offers a unique perspective by vividly and beautifully capturing a person's broader life, showcasing their interests and the defining characteristics that make them who they are.

What is a portrait documentary?

Portrait documentaries, also known as biographical documentaries, are films that capture the life, character and stories of a person. These documentaries aim to provide an exploration of an individual's life, showcasing their experiences, personality and significant moments.

Through interviews, archival footage and storytelling techniques, portrait documentaries seek to preserve and celebrate the legacy and wisdom of the person. They allow viewers to connect with the unique journey of the individual and learn from their stories.

  • A Native Origin portrait documentary provides a wonderful opportunity to preserve and share the unique stories and experiences of your loved ones. These documentaries allow your relatives to share their stories in their own words, including life lessons and defining moments that shaped their character.

During the interview, two cameras are used to capture your family member's stories. The most significant stories and moments are then carefully curated and edited into a cinematic film, creating a beautiful portrait of their life.

You and your family will receive both the full interview footage and the cinematic film to keep. This ensures that these stories are preserved and can be passed on to future generations.

  • Through portrait documentaries, we have the opportunity to capture and showcase the essence of individuals, including their unique personalities, mannerisms and idiosyncrasies.

Perhaps they have a strong set of personal values or philosophies that they have passed on to their children. Maybe there's an aspect of their personality that has been the driving force behind the positive impact they've had on a community. Or perhaps, they have a memorable way of telling a joke at just the right time to defuse tension in a situation. All of this can be captured.

We can also capture the things that your family member enjoys. Along with their family, there are often elements of their interests that are a fundamental part of who they are. This could include a sport or hobby they love, a career that is important to their identity, or experiences that have shaped them into who they are today.

By capturing your loved ones naturally and authentically, you can gain a deeper understanding of how their interests and experiences have shaped them, and in turn, gain insights about yourself and your own identity.

  • Portrait documentaries can bring to light hidden aspects of a person's life, revealing untold stories, experiences, and insights. These documentaries not only provide factual accounts of events but also allow us to understand the thoughts, emotions, and lived experiences of our family members.

For example, while a census record may tell us where someone worked, a portrait documentary lets us truly feel their experiences as they share their story in their own words.

By asking meaningful questions and creating a safe space for stories to be shared, we have the opportunity to uncover and learn from these personal narratives.

  • Storytelling has been a powerful method of collecting and sharing the wisdom of older community members with younger generations. The lessons and experiences gained by our relatives can have a significant impact on descendants several generations later.

Portrait documentaries, by documenting the thoughts, wisdom, and life lessons of our loved ones, serve as a valuable resource for preserving and sharing their accumulated knowledge and experiences.

A portrait documentary also acts as a digital medium to preserve the lessons and wisdom acquired, ensuring that the valuable insights and guidance of our loved ones can continue to inspire and guide us.

  • The act of asking and listening, of learning and discovering, can be a valuable experience, creating a meaningful moment to share with your loved one.

Because many of us have a desire to share our stories and experiences with those we care about, setting aside time for a loved one to share their life's story can be rewarding for both of you. Simply asking questions and creating a safe space for them to talk about their lives can help you form a stronger bond.

Then, once complete, watching a documentary that features that person's life can bring a sense of connection, allowing viewers to feel closer to their loved ones and gain a deeper understanding of their lives and experiences.

A bespoke set of films; as individual as the person they feature.

  • A person's character is unique and individual to them, which means that every aspect of the production process needs to be tailored specifically to their personality and individual differences. Using a generic approach for everyone would result in a film lacking authenticity, sincerity, and depth.

That's why the pre-production phase is an essential part of the Native Origin process. By conducting an initial interview and questionnaire, doing in-depth research, and careful planning, every step in the process is aligned with the unique nature of the featured individual. This approach enables the creation of interview questions tailored to them, identification of shooting schedules and locations that are specific to them, and curating stories that accurately and authentically capture all the important details.

Additionally, it is important for me to understand your perception of your loved one, as you have developed a detailed understanding of their identity throughout your life. By including your perspective in the filmmaking process, I can ensure that the final product more closely reflects your personal perception of who they are. Your unique perspective offers an alternate view of the person being featured, which can be incredibly valuable.

Authenticity, individuality, and sincerity are key factors that drive the creation of a Native Origin portrait documentary. By employing artful documentary processes and adopting a rigorous approach to gathering and recording information, I aim to create a documentary that truly reflects the life of the individual being featured. And through the power of storytelling, we can craft a documentary that feels genuine and authentic to their experiences.

When only the highest quality, cinematic filmmaking will do.

  • Capturing genuine moments as they happen in real-time is the main challenge in shooting a portrait documentary. It is important to avoid asking someone to rehearse or act, as it would make the footage feel unnatural and inauthentic, which would be noticeable in the final film. Instead, my working processes and tools are specifically designed to capture beautifully cinematic footage as each moment unfolds.

Additionally, I carefully select equipment that adds a touch of magic to the character and quality of the final film. This includes using a camera with outstanding colour reproduction and the ability to capture a wide range of light and dark tones, utilising vintage lenses that provide a beautiful organic texture to every shot, employing lighting technology to create natural and soft lighting for scenes, and using broadcast-quality microphones to capture your loved one's voice as naturally and transparently as possible.

All of this time, effort, and energy is invested with the simple purpose of creating a beautifully cinematic film that faithfully portrays someone who holds great significance to you. My aim is that every time you watch their film, you are transported and can fully immerse yourself in the richness of their world.
